Utility:
The happiness or satisfaction derived by person from
the consumption of a good or service at a particular time is called utility. It
is measured in the form of ‘utils’. This utility differs from person to person
at the same time and also for the same person from time to time.
Marginal
utility:
Marginal utility refers to the additional satisfaction
a consumer gains from consuming one more additional unit of a good or service.
Total
utility:
It refers to the total satisfaction received by a
consumer by consuming all the units of goods or service. It can also be said to
be the sum total of all the marginal utility derived by consuming all the
units.
Law
of diminishing marginal utility:
According to this law, marginal utility derived by
consuming each additional unit decreases as an individual takes more and more
units at given particular time period.
It can also be said that the satisfaction gained by
the consumer for each additional unit decreases over time.
We should note that only the marginal utility
decreases by consumption of each additional unit but not the total utility as
it increases at a diminishing rate.
Example:
Reference: my notes |
Lets, take punam who likes to eat momos. One fine
evening after the class she was very hungry and went to eat her favourite momos
in a near by shop. When she ate the fist one she felt like it was the best she
had lets take it as 10 utils of satisfaction. After eating 3 she lost the
hunger and not getting as much satisfaction as the first one but she continued.
After eating another 2 she is full and lost the interest to eat any more, but
she continued although she is getting an negative satisfaction.
Now lets see it in the form of a table,
As you can see from the table the marginal utility is
decreasing from each additional unit and reached 0 at the 6th unit
at that point she is not getting any additional satisfaction but continued with
the 7th unit which is actually giving a negative satisfaction.
